Bolivians Rally for Cuban Cooperation

BOLIVIA, April 25, 2008. Cuba solidarity groups in Bolivia and members of the parents association of Bolivians studying in Cuba expressed their support Thursday for the unconditional cooperation offered by the island and condemned defamatory campaigns of the Bolivian opposition over the death of a student.

In a gathering at the Plaza Murillo, near the presidential palace in La Paz, activists carrying Bolivian and Cuban flags and placards expressed fraternity between the two countries and repudiated the attacks criticizing the Cuban assistance from adversaries of the process of change taking place in Bolivia.

Santos Melendes, president of the parents association, read a statement from the organizations expressing their gratitude for the quality of education received by their sons and daughters at Cuban universities.

The text also categorically rejects the manipulations and slanderous remarks about the transfer to La Paz of the remains of Beatriz Porco, who died of a vascular brain disease in Cuba where she was studying medicine.

We reject the dark political interests using the pain and ignorance of the Porco family to try and discredit the humanitarian efforts of the Cuban people, adds the statement.

The document also makes reference to an article by Fidel Castro published on Friday, in which the leader of the Cuban revolution denounced the campaign unleashed after the death of the Bolivian student and offered detailed information on the causes of her death.

ANOTHER BOLIVIAN MUNICIPALITY FREE OF ILLITERACY

SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia, April 25.— Bolivian President Evo Morales declared Friday the municipality of Mairana a territory free of illiteracy, the 140th of the 327 municipalities the government seeks to proclaim by November.

Morales explained that the delivery of 300 computers for the three provinces that make up the municipality of Mairana is another demonstration of the government’s effort to create computer schools, where children, teenagers and adults can learn. (Cubaminrex-Granma-PL)
