Cuban Ambassador in Suriname visits Rice Research Institute in Nickerie

Suriname. May 7, 2008. The Ambassador of Cuba in Suriname, Andrés González Garrido, made a visit to the Rice Research Institute (ADRON) located in the district of Nickerie in the coastal zone of the country, some 150 kilometers west of the capital, Paramaribo.

In the Surinamese institution, the Cuban diplomat was received by Kardie Kartosoewito, director of the center, and Debidajal Chedammi, coordinator of production of the same institution.

Both officials gave an overview of the objectives of the research institute and the obtained results. They expressed their interest in establishing cooperation and exchanges with similar Cuban institutions.

The Cuban ambassador stated that the priority policy of the Cuban government is to guarantee the production of food for the consumption of the Cuban population.

He also mentioned the recent speech, delivered by the Cuban President of the Councils of State and Ministers, comrade Raúl Castro Ruz, in the Plenary Session of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the party. In this speech Raúl Castro insisted that food production is the most important task of the government, because it is a subject of national security.

The Cuban diplomat also said that now, when there is a worldwide economical crisis, the rich countries always have more possibilities of subsisting, but Third World Countries like Cuba and Suriname have to unite to find solutions for their peoples.

The Ambassador gave the two Surinamese officials information about the IV International Congress of Rice, that will take place in the Palace of Conventions in Havana, from 2-6 June this year. He also offered them information about research done by the Cuban Research Institute for Rice, coordinator of this Congress. Both Surinamese officials will attend the IV international Congress of Rice in Havana.

Finally the Ambassador, and ADRON’s director and coordinator made a tour of different rice mills, and harvest areas that belong to the center.

The ADRON Institute was founded ten years ago and has obtained important results with regard to improving the quality of different varieties of rice, and is working on other objectives to develop and extend the harvests of rice.
