CUBA, May 8 , 2008 . Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding visited the Ramon Pando Ferrer Ophthalmologic Institute in Havana on Monday as part of his official visit to Cuba.
Golding was received by Yiliam Jimenez, deputy Foreign minister, and Dr. Marcelino Rio, director of the institute. Rio gave a detailed explanation of the center’s work, including its different departments and technology employed. He also spoke about the importance of the Operation Miracle initiative (called Vision Now in the English speaking Caribbean) sponsored by Cuba and Venezuela. The program provides subsidized eye surgeries and treatments to patients in several countries of the region.
"I am very impressed," said Golding, who said the techniques he saw were only comparable to those used in developed countries. The prime minister said the effort is an indication that despite the many challenges facing Cuba, the government has decided to give the highest priority to offering the best medical attention to its people.
Golding said that this is one of the areas of cooperation between Jamaica and Cuba, and he expressed his hope that the current visit will contribute to opening a similar facility in Jamaica.
"Relations between Cuba and Jamaica are solid and will continue to grow stronger," he concluded.( Cubaminrex- Granma).
